Rotational velocities of A-type stars in the northern hemisphere. II. Measurement of v sin i
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of v sin i forA-type stars, begun by Royer et al. (\cite{Ror_02a}). Spectra of 249 B8to F2-type stars brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoirede Haute-Provence (OHP). Fourier transforms of several line profiles inthe range 4200-4600 Å are used to derive v sin i from thefrequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of the sampleindicates that measurement error mainly depends on v sin i and thisrelative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% onaverage. The systematic shift with respect to standard values fromSlettebak et al. (\cite{Slk_75}), previously found in the first paper,is here confirmed. Comparisons with data from the literature agree withour findings: v sin i values from Slettebak et al. are underestimatedand the relation between both scales follows a linear law ensuremath vsin inew = 1.03 v sin iold+7.7. Finally, thesedata are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al.\cite{Ror_02a}), together with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell(\cite{AbtMol95}). The resulting sample includes some 2150 stars withhomogenized rotational velocities. Based on observations made atObservatoire de Haute Provence (CNRS), France. Rotational velocities of A-type stars. I. Measurement of v sin i in the southern hemisphere
Within the scope of a Key Programme determining fundamental parametersof stars observed by HIPPARCOS, spectra of 525 B8 to F2-type starsbrighter than V=8 have been collected at ESO. Fourier transforms ofseveral line profiles in the range 4200-4500 Å are used to derivev sin i from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis ofthe sample indicates that measurement error is a function of v sin i andthis relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 6%on average. The results obtained are compared with data from theliterature. There is a systematic shift from standard values from\citet{Slk_75}, which are 10 to 12% lower than our findings. Comparisonswith other independent v sin i values tend to prove that those fromSlettebak et al. are underestimated. This effect is attributed to thepresence of binaries in the standard sample of Slettebak et al., and tothe model atmosphere they used. Based on observations made at theEuropean Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile, in the frameworkof the Key Programme 5-004-43K. Search for reference A0 dwarf stars: Masses and luminosities revisited with HIPPARCOS parallaxes
Hipparcos data for 71 nearby dwarf A0 stars were combined with otherdata, in particular with high resolution spectra to establish the HRdiagram in this temperature range. Almost 30% of unknown binaries weredetected and discarded before establishing the cal M-L relation forbright A0 V field stars. The relationship derived for these single starsis compared to the classical diagram derived from eclipsing binaries. The scatter of the latter is examined and the role of gravity isdiscussed. A good agreement is found between the evolution-based surfacegravity log g_ev and the value of log g_ph obtained from photometricdata. Based on observations collected at the European SouthernObservatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile in the framework of the Key Programme5-004-43K and on data from the ESA Hipparcos astrometry satellite. An extensive Delta a-photometric survey of southern B and A type bright stars
Photoelectric photometry of 803 southern BS objects in the Deltaa-system as detection tool for magnetic chemically peculiar (=CP2) starshas been carried out and compared to published spectral types. Thestatistical yield of such objects detected by both techniques ispractically the same. We show that there are several factors whichcontaminate the search for these stars, but this contamination is onlyof the order of 10% in both techniques. We find a smooth transition fromnormal to peculiar stars. Our sample exhibits the largest fraction ofCP2 stars at their bluest colour interval, i.e. 10% of all stars in thecolour range -0.19 <= B-V < -0.10 or -0.10 <= b-y < -0.05.No peculiar stars based on the Delta a-criterion were found at bluercolours. Towards the red side the fraction of CP2 stars drops to about3% for positive values of B-V or b-y with red limits roughlycorresponding to normal stars of spectral type A5. The photometricbehaviour of other peculiar stars: Am, HgMn, delta Del, lambda Boo, Heabnormal stars, as well as Be/shell stars and supergiants shows someslight, but definite deviations from normal stars. Spectroscopic andvisual binaries are not distinguished from normal stars in their Delta abehaviour. The results of this work justify larger statistical work(e.g. in open clusters) employing more time-saving photometric methods(CCD). \newpage Based on observations obtained at the European SouthernObservatory, La Silla, Chile. This research has made use of the Simbaddatabase, operated at CDS, Strasbourg, France. The Near-Infrared Spectrum of the Brown Dwarf Gliese 229B
A medium-resolution 1.0--2.5 mu m spectrum of the brown dwarf Gliese229B has been obtained using the facility spectrometer CGS4 on theUnited Kingdom Infrared Telescope. In addition to the broad spectralstructure seen in earlier low-resolution observations, the new spectrumreveals a large number of absorption lines, many of which can beidentified with water vapor. Water and methane are both shown to bestrong absorbers in the near-infrared spectrum of the object. Severalspectral features in Gl 229B that are attributable to methane match onesseen in reflection in the giant outer planets and, in particular, Titan.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue.
We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

The stellar temperature scale for stars of spectral types from O8 to F6 and the standard deviation of the MK spectral classification
Empirical effective temperature of 211 early-type stars found in aprevious investigation (Kontizas and Theodossiou, 1980; Theodossiou,1985) are combined with the effective temperatures of 313 early-typestars from the literature. From these effective temperatures of a totalnumber of 524 early-type stars of spectral types from O8 to F6 a newstellar temperature scale is developed along with the standard deviationof the MK spectral classification.

The UV spectrum as a signature of the Lambda Bootis character
The spectra of all the stars previously classified as Lambda Bootisstars and observed by the IUE satellite at low resolution, in the shortwavelength range, are analyzed. The usefulness of this spectral rangefor classifying the Lambda Boo stars is shown; the UV criteria used todistinguish the Lambda Boo stars from other metal-deficient stars areselected and applied. The origin of the Lambda Boo phenomenon is not yetclear (Baschek and Slettebak, 1988) and a careful selection of thecandidates is the first step for a clear definition of the theoreticalproblem. From the present study, it turns out that only seven out of the19 candidates can be assigned to the Lambda Boo group, while for theother stars the previous classification must be considered eroneous. Thepeculiarities of the other metal-deficient, but not Lambda Boo, starsare discussed.

Optical observations of ultraviolet objects. I - Spectral classification of 103 stars /l = 200-275 deg/
Results are presented of a program of spectral classification of 103stars originally selected as ultraviolet objects from TD-1 satellitephotometry with the S2/68 experiment. Most of the objects appear to bespectroscopically normal stars; the method of selection yielded a sampleof relatively unreddened B stars at distances up to about 2 kpc. Thisresult is compared with recent studies of the spatial distribution ofinterstellar extinction in the same regions of the sky.

Multicolour UBVRI photometry of stars in M 17
Multicolor UBVRI photometry of stars towards M 17 demonstrate theexistence of a young stellar group with partly heavily obscured O and Bstars in this region. The photometric distance of this cluster is foundto be 2.2 + or - 0.2 kpc. The photometric data can only be interpretedby assuming an abnormal reddening law with R equals 4.2 inside the darkcloud of M 17. The problem of the energy balance of M 17 is discussed bymeans of the observed early type stars.

Absolute luminosity calibration of Stroemgren's 'intermediate group'
A relation defining the luminosity index for Stroemgren's (1966)intermediate group (A0 to A3 stars) in terms of absolute magnitude iscalibrated using a method based on the principle of maximum likelihood. This relation is also calibrated for the case when the 'a' index iscorrected for reddening. For both relations, calculations are made ofthe magnitude dispersion, the mean velocity components and correspondingdispersion, and the precision of each parameter. The results are shownto be in fairly good agreement with Stroemgren's (1966) values, and arelation incorporating the corrected 'a' index is proposed formain-sequence stars. The absolute magnitudes obtained with a relation ofthe present type are compared with those derived from trigonometricparallaxes and with those obtained by Eggen (1972).
