The HELLAS2XMM Survey. II. Multiwavelength Observations of P3: An X-Ray-bright, Optically Inactive Galaxy
Recent X-ray surveys have clearly demonstrated that a population ofoptically dull, X-ray-bright galaxies is emerging at 2-10 keV fluxes ofthe order of 10-14 ergs cm-2 s-1.Although they might constitute an important fraction of the sourcesresponsible for the hard X-ray background, their nature is stillunknown. With the aim of better understanding the physical mechanismsresponsible for the observed properties, we have started an extensiveprogram of multiwavelength follow-up observations of hard X-ray,optically quiet galaxies discovered with XMM-Newton. Here we report theresults of what can be considered the first example of this class ofobjects: CXOU J031238.9-765134, originally discovered by Chandra, andoptically identified by Fiore et al. (2000) with an apparently normalearly-type galaxy at z=0.159, usually known as FIORE P3. Analysis of thebroadband energy distribution suggests the presence of a heavilyobscured active nucleus. This work is based on observations collected atthe European Southern Observatory (proposal 66.B-0472A), La Silla andParanal, Chile, and observations made with the XMM-Newton, an ESAscience mission with instruments and contributions directly funded byESA member states and the USA (NASA).

The ROSAT all-sky survey catalogue of optically bright main-sequence stars and subgiant stars
We present X-ray data for all main-sequence and subgiant stars ofspectral types A, F, G, and K and luminosity classes IV and V listed inthe Bright Star Catalogue that have been detected as X-ray sources inthe ROSAT all-sky survey; several stars without luminosity class arealso included. The catalogue contains 980 entries yielding an averagedetection rate of 32 percent. In addition to count rates, sourcedetection parameters, hardness ratios, and X-ray fluxes we also listX-ray luminosities derived from Hipparcos parallaxes. An extensive Delta a-photometric survey of southern B and A type bright stars
Photoelectric photometry of 803 southern BS objects in the Deltaa-system as detection tool for magnetic chemically peculiar (=CP2) starshas been carried out and compared to published spectral types. Thestatistical yield of such objects detected by both techniques ispractically the same. We show that there are several factors whichcontaminate the search for these stars, but this contamination is onlyof the order of 10% in both techniques. We find a smooth transition fromnormal to peculiar stars. Our sample exhibits the largest fraction ofCP2 stars at their bluest colour interval, i.e. 10% of all stars in thecolour range -0.19 <= B-V < -0.10 or -0.10 <= b-y < -0.05.No peculiar stars based on the Delta a-criterion were found at bluercolours. Towards the red side the fraction of CP2 stars drops to about3% for positive values of B-V or b-y with red limits roughlycorresponding to normal stars of spectral type A5. The photometricbehaviour of other peculiar stars: Am, HgMn, delta Del, lambda Boo, Heabnormal stars, as well as Be/shell stars and supergiants shows someslight, but definite deviations from normal stars. Spectroscopic andvisual binaries are not distinguished from normal stars in their Delta abehaviour. The results of this work justify larger statistical work(e.g. in open clusters) employing more time-saving photometric methods(CCD). \newpage Based on observations obtained at the European SouthernObservatory, La Silla, Chile. DDO photometry of E-region stars and equatorial standards - II
This paper deals with the observations of 72 of McClure's equatorialstandard stars, made with the same photometer and DDO filters as wereused for the E-region stars in Cousins' Paper I in order to standardizethe observations. These observations were reduced in the natural systemand later transformed into McClure's system. Zero-point ties between theequatorial and E-region stars were also needed to standardize the lattersystem. With the exception of C(38-41), our photometry agrees as wellwith McClure's standard system as his own observations do, but both showsome small, apparently systematic, differences which are almostinevitable with a system like the DDO unless the response functions arevery well matched. Comparisons with 17 of Dean's measurements ofE-region stars show good agreement (~2 mmag) for the averagedzero-points, but there are small colour differences affecting C(35-38)and C(38-41) because of differences between the filters and thereduction procedures. This paper also deals with several problems in theDDO photometry that have implications for precision photometry ingeneral.

The Southern Vilnius Photometric System. III. Observations of E and F Harvard Standard Regions, 47 TUC and Some Metal-Deficient Stars
The results of photoelectric photometry in the Vilnius system of 101southern stars in the areas E1--E4, E8, E9 and F1 as well as of somemetal deficient stars are presented. Photometrically determined spectraltypes and luminosity classes of these stars are also given.

Southern JHKL standards
The basis for the current SAAO standard photometric system at JHKL isgiven. This depends on an extensive investigation involving 230 starsdistributed around the sky. The accuracy is estimated at + or - 0.02 magfor J, H and K and + or - 0.05 mag for L.

Hot subluminous stars at high galactic latitudes. I - Spectra and Stromgren photometry
Spectra of 92 stars selected from the Palomar-Green Catalog, most ofthem being hydrogen-rich (53) or helium-rich (21) hot subdwarfs, arepresented. The rest belong to other spectral types, e.g. HBB ormain-sequence B stars. Also presented is Stromgren photometry for 39stars of the Palomer-Green Catalog, 29 of them belonging to thespectroscopically observed sample. The observations and their reductionare described and a spectral classification of the stars is given basedon the spectra published here.

Secondary standards for the Stromgren UVBY system
Observations of 158 E region stars have been made in the Stromgrensystem, using the 46-cm reflector at Cape Town. They are mostly brighterthan eighth magnitude and are intended for use as secondary standardsfor the four-color system. The E region relative zero points are definedwith a precision of + or - 0.001 mag, and the internal standard errorsof the colors life between + or - 0.001 and + or - 0.002 mag.

The local system of early type stars - Spatial extent and kinematics
Published uvby and H-beta photometric data and proper motions arecompiled and analyzed to characterize the structure and kinematics ofthe bright early-type O-A0 stars in the solar vicinity, with a focus onthe Gould belt. The selection and calibration techniques are explained,and the data are presented in extensive tables and graphs and discussedin detail. The Gould belt stars of age less than 20 Myr are shown togive belt inclination 19 deg to the Galactic plane and node-lineorientation in the direction of Galactic rotation, while the symmetricaldistribution about the Galactic plane and kinematic properties (purecircular differential rotation) of the belt stars over 60 Myr oldresemble those of fainter nonbelt stars of all ages. The unresolveddiscrepancy between the expansion observed in the youngest nearby starsand the predictions of simple models of expansion from a point isattributed to the inhomogeneous distribution of interstellar matter.

UBV photometry of E region standard stars of intermediate brightness
Photometry data are given for 335 stars in the nine E regions.Observations were made using a photometer and filters on the 47 cmreflector at Cape Town. The stellar dispersions are summarized. Data arepresented in tabular form.

Bright southern stars of astrophysical interest
The paper lists a number of bright peculiar stars in the SouthernHemisphere discovered on 20-A/mm spectrograms. Recent information isalso given for a few known peculiar objects.
