Stellar Populations in Nearby Lenticular Galaxies
We have obtained two-dimensional spectral data for a sample of 58 nearbyS0 galaxies with the Multi-Pupil Fiber/Field Spectrograph of the 6 mtelescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the RussianAcademy of Sciences. The Lick indices Hβ, Mg b, and arecalculated separately for the nuclei and for the bulges taken as therings between R=4'' and 7", and the luminosity-weighted ages,metallicities, and Mg/Fe ratios of the stellar populations are estimatedby comparing the data to single stellar population (SSP) models. Fourtypes of galaxy environments are considered: clusters, centers ofgroups, other places in groups, and the field. The nuclei are found tobe on average slightly younger than the bulges in any type ofenvironment, and the bulges of S0 galaxies in sparse environments areyounger than those in dense environments. The effect can be partlyattributed to the well-known age correlation with the stellar velocitydispersion in early-type galaxies (in our sample the galaxies in sparseenvironments are on average less massive than those in denseenvironments), but for the most massive S0 galaxies, withσ*=170-220 km s-1, the age dependence on theenvironment is still significant at the confidence level of 1.5 σ.Based on observations collected with the 6 m telescope (BTA) at theSpecial Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) of the Russian Academy ofSciences (RAS).

The AMIGA sample of isolated galaxies. II. Morphological refinement
We present a refinement of the optical morphologies for galaxies in theCatalog of Isolated Galaxies that forms the basis of the AMIGA (Analysisof the interstellar Medium of Isolated GAlaxies) project. Uniformreclassification using the digitized POSS II data benefited from thehigh resolution and dynamic range of that sky survey. Comparison withindependent classifications made for an SDSS overlap sample of more than200 galaxies confirms the reliability of the early vs. late-typediscrimination and the accuracy of spiral subtypes within Δ T =1-2. CCD images taken at the Observatorio de Sierra Nevada were alsoused to solve ambiguities in early versus late-type classifications. Aconsiderable number of galaxies in the catalog (n = 193) are flagged forthe presence of nearby companions or signs of distortion likely due tointeraction. This most isolated sample of galaxies in the local Universeis dominated by two populations: 1) 82% are spirals (Sa-Sd) with thebulk being luminous systems with small bulges (63% between types Sb-Sc)and 2) a significant population of early-type E-S0 galaxies (14%). Mostof the types later than Sd are low luminosity galaxies concentrated inthe local supercluster where isolation is difficult to evaluate. Thelate-type spiral majority of the sample spans a luminosity rangeMB-corr = -18 to -22 mag. Few of the E/S0 population are moreluminous than -21.0 marking the absence of the often-sought superL* merger (e.g. fossil elliptical) population. The rarity ofhigh luminosity systems results in a fainter derived M* forthis population compared to the spiral optical luminosity function(OLF). The E-S0 population is from 0.2 to 0.6 mag fainter depending onhow the sample is defined. This marks the AMIGA sample as unique amongsamples that compare early and late-type OLFs separately. In othersamples, which always involve galaxies in higher density environments,M^*_E/S0 is almost always 0.3-0.5 mag brighter than M^*_S, presumablyreflecting a stronger correlation between M* andenvironmental density for early-type galaxies.

Group, field and isolated early-type galaxies - II. Global trends from nuclear data
We have derived ages, metallicities and enhanced-element ratios[α/Fe] for a sample of 83 early-type galaxies essentially ingroups, the field or isolated objects. The stellar-population propertiesderived for each galaxy correspond to the nuclear re/8aperture extraction. The median age found for Es is 5.8+/-0.6 Gyr andthe average metallicity is +0.37+/-0.03 dex. For S0s, the median age is3.0+/-0.6 Gyr and [Z/H]= 0.53+/-0.04 dex. We compare the distribution ofour galaxies in the Hβ-[MgFe] diagram with Fornax galaxies. Ourelliptical galaxies are 3-4 Gyr younger than Es in the Fornax cluster.We find that the galaxies lie in a plane defined by [Z/H]= 0.99logσ0- 0.46 log(age) - 1.60, or in linear terms Z~σ0× (age) -0.5. More massive (largerσ0) and older galaxies present, on average, large[α/Fe] values, and therefore must have undergone shorterstar-formation time-scales. Comparing group against field/isolatedgalaxies, it is not clear that environment plays an important role indetermining their stellar-population history. In particular, ourisolated galaxies show ages differing by more than 8 Gyr. Finally weexplore our large spectral coverage to derive log(O/H) metallicity fromthe Hα and NIIλ6584 and compare it with model-dependent[Z/H]. We find that the O/H abundances are similar for all galaxies, andwe can interpret it as if most chemical evolution has already finishedin these galaxies.

Group, field and isolated early-type galaxies - I. Observations and nuclear data
This is the first paper of a series on the investigation of stellarpopulation properties and galaxy evolution of an observationallyhomogeneous sample of early-type galaxies in groups, field and isolatedgalaxies.Here we present high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) long-slit spectroscopyof 86 nearby elliptical and S0 galaxies. Eight of them are isolated,selected according to a rigorous criterion, which guarantees a genuinelow-density subsample. The present survey has the advantage of coveringa larger wavelength range than normally found in the literature, whichincludes [OIII]λ5007 and Hα, both lines important foremission correction. Among the 86 galaxies with S/N >= 15 (perresolution element, for re/8 central aperture), 57 have theirHβ-index corrected for emission (the average correction is 0.190Åin Hβ) and 42 galaxies reveal [OIII]λ5007 emission,of which 16 also show obvious Hα emission. Most of the galaxies inthe sample do not show obvious signs of disturbances nor tidal featuresin the morphologies, although 11 belong to the Arp catalogue of peculiargalaxies; only three of them (NGC 750, 751 and 3226) seem to be stronglyinteracting. We present the measurement of 25 central line-strengthindices calibrated to the Lick/IDS system. Kinematic information isobtained for the sample. We analyse the line-strength index versusvelocity dispersion relations for our sample of mainly low-densityenvironment galaxies, and compare the slope of the relations withcluster galaxies from the literature. Our main findings are that theindex-σ0 relations presented for low-density regionsare not significantly different from those of cluster E/S0s. The slopeof the index-σ0 relations does not seem to change forearly-type galaxies of different environmental densities, but thescatter of the relations seems larger for group, field and isolatedgalaxies than for cluster galaxies.

Stellar Kinematics of Boxy Bulges: Large-Scale Bars and Inner Disks
Long-slit stellar kinematic observations were obtained along the majoraxis of 30 edge-on spiral galaxies, 24 with a boxy or peanut-shaped(B/PS) bulge and six with other bulge types for comparison. Such B/PSbulges are identified in at least 45% of highly inclined systems, and agrowing body of theoretical and observational work suggests that theyare the edge-on projection of thickened bars. Profiles of the meanstellar velocity V, the velocity dispersion σ, as well as theasymmetric (h3) and symmetric (h4) deviations froma pure Gaussian are presented for all objects. Comparing these profileswith stellar kinematic bar diagnostics developed from N-bodysimulations, we find bar signatures in 24 of our sample galaxies (80%).Galaxies with a B/PS bulge typically show a double-humped rotation curvewith an intermediate dip or plateau. They also frequently show a ratherflat central velocity dispersion profile accompanied by a secondary peakor plateau, and numerous galaxies have a local central σ minimum(>~40%). The h3 profiles display up to three slopereversals. Most importantly, h3 is normally correlated with Vover the presumed bar length, contrary to expectations from axisymmetricdisks. These characteristic bar signatures strengthen the case for aclose relationship between B/PS bulges and bars and leave little roomfor other explanations of the bulges' shape. We also find thath3 is anticorrelated with V in the very center of mostgalaxies (>~60%), indicating that these objects additionally harborcold and dense decoupled (quasi-) axisymmetric central stellar disks,which may be related to the central light peaks. These central diskscoincide with previously identified star-forming ionized-gas disks(nuclear spirals) in gas-rich systems, and we argue that they formed outof gas accumulated by the bar at its center through inflow. As suggestedby N-body models, the asymmetry of the velocity profile (h3)appears to be a reliable tracer of asymmetries in disks, allowing us todiscriminate between axisymmetric and barred disks seen in projection.B/PS bulges (and thus a large fraction of all bulges) appear to be madeup mostly of disk material, which has acquired a large vertical extentthrough bar-driven vertical instabilities. Their formation is thusprobably dominated by secular evolution processes rather than merging.

Infrared Observations of Galaxies in the Local Universe. II. 391 Calibrated Images with Photometric and Structural Measurements
This paper presents empirical results from a deep imaging survey ofgalaxies in the local universe at the J and Ks wavelengths.Three hundred ninety-one images have been obtained and calibrated usingthe same camera and filter set with the Steward Observatory 1.6 m KuiperTelescope on Mount Bigelow and the 2.3 m Bok Telescope on Kitt Peak. Thelimiting magnitude is typically 22 mag arcsec-1 at J and 21mag arcsec-1 at Ks. The central surfacebrightness, apparent magnitudes, sizes, scale lengths, and inclinationsare tabulated from measurements made using these data. The purpose ofthis paper is to provide basic near-infrared data on a variety of galaxytypes.

Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-Type Galaxies: Circular-Aperture Photometry
We present R-band CCD photometry for 1332 early-type galaxies, observedas part of the ENEAR survey of peculiar motions using early-typegalaxies in the nearby universe. Circular apertures are used to tracethe surface brightness profiles, which are then fitted by atwo-component bulge-disk model. From the fits, we obtain the structuralparameters required to estimate galaxy distances using theDn-σ and fundamental plane relations. We find thatabout 12% of the galaxies are well represented by a pure r1/4law, while 87% are best fitted by a two-component model. There are 356repeated observations of 257 galaxies obtained during different runsthat are used to derive statistical corrections and bring the data to acommon system. We also use these repeated observations to estimate ourinternal errors. The accuracy of our measurements are tested by thecomparison of 354 galaxies in common with other authors. Typical errorsin our measurements are 0.011 dex for logDn, 0.064 dex forlogre, 0.086 mag arcsec-2 for<μe>, and 0.09 for mRC,comparable to those estimated by other authors. The photometric datareported here represent one of the largest high-quality and uniformall-sky samples currently available for early-type galaxies in thenearby universe, especially suitable for peculiar motion studies.Based on observations at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO),National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which is operated by theAssociation of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., undercooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation (NSF);European Southern Observatory (ESO); Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory(FLWO); and the MDM Observatory on Kitt Peak.

Revised positions for CIG galaxies
We present revised positions for the 1051 galaxies belonging to theKarachentseva Catalog of Isolated Galaxies (CIG). New positions werecalculated by applying SExtractor to the Digitized Sky Survey CIG fieldswith a spatial resolution of 1 arcsper 2. We visually checked theresults and for 118 galaxies had to recompute the assigned positions dueto complex morphologies (e.g. distorted isophotes, undefined nuclei,knotty galaxies) or the presence of bright stars. We found differencesbetween older and newer positions of up to 38 arcsec with a mean valueof 2 arcsper 96 relative to SIMBAD and up to 38 arcsec and 2 arcsper 42respectively relative to UZC. Based on star positions from the APMcatalog we determined that the DSS astrometry of five CIG fields has amean offset in (alpha , delta ) of (-0 arcsper 90, 0 arcsper 93) with adispersion of 0 arcsper 4. These results have been confirmed using the2MASS All-Sky Catalog of Point Sources. A new catalogue of ISM content of normal galaxies
We have compiled a catalogue of the gas content for a sample of 1916galaxies, considered to be a fair representation of ``normality''. Thedefinition of a ``normal'' galaxy adopted in this work implies that wehave purposely excluded from the catalogue galaxies having distortedmorphology (such as interaction bridges, tails or lopsidedness) and/orany signature of peculiar kinematics (such as polar rings,counterrotating disks or other decoupled components). In contrast, wehave included systems hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) in thecatalogue. This catalogue revises previous compendia on the ISM contentof galaxies published by \citet{bregman} and \citet{casoli}, andcompiles data available in the literature from several small samples ofgalaxies. Masses for warm dust, atomic and molecular gas, as well asX-ray luminosities have been converted to a uniform distance scale takenfrom the Catalogue of Principal Galaxies (PGC). We have used twodifferent normalization factors to explore the variation of the gascontent along the Hubble sequence: the blue luminosity (LB)and the square of linear diameter (D225). Ourcatalogue significantly improves the statistics of previous referencecatalogues and can be used in future studies to define a template ISMcontent for ``normal'' galaxies along the Hubble sequence. Bar Galaxies and Their Environments
The prints of the Palomar Sky Survey, luminosity classifications, andradial velocities were used to assign all northern Shapley-Ames galaxiesto either (1) field, (2) group, or (3) cluster environments. Thisinformation for 930 galaxies shows no evidence for a dependence of barfrequency on galaxy environment. This suggests that the formation of abar in a disk galaxy is mainly determined by the properties of theparent galaxy, rather than by the characteristics of its environment.

Gas properties of Hii and starburst galaxies: relation with the stellar population
We study the gas emission of galaxies with active star formation,consisting mostly of Hii and starburst galaxies, as well as some Seyfert2 galaxies, and determine chemical and physical parameters. The dataconsist of 19 high signal-to-noise ratio optical templates, a result ofgrouping 185 emission-line galaxy spectra. Underlying stellar populationmodels (from Raimann et al.) were subtracted from the templates in orderto isolate the pure emission component. We analyse the distribution ofthese improved signal-to-noise ratio emission spectra in diagnosticdiagrams and find that the Hii templates show a smaller spread inlog([Oiii]/Hβ) values than the individual galaxies, apparently as aresult of the population subtraction and a better signal-to-noise ratio.We thus suggest the template sequence as a fiducial observational locusfor Hii galaxies which can be used as reference for models. The sequenceof line ratios presented by the Hii galaxies in the diagramlog([Oiii]λ5007/Hβ) versus log([Nii]λ6584/Hα)is primarily owing to the gas metallicity, of which thelog([Nii]/Hα) ratio is a direct estimator. We also study theproperties of the starburst galaxies and those intermediate between Hiiand starburst galaxies, which are more metal rich and sit on moremassive galaxies. We discuss the present results in the frame of arecently proposed equivalent-width diagnostic diagram for emission-linegalaxies (by Rola et al.) and conclude that the observed ranges inW([Oii])/W(Hβ) and W(Hβ) are mostly owing to the non-ionizingstellar population contribution. We propose that W(Hβ) be used asan estimator of this contribution to the continuum, and briefly discussimplications to the cosmological use of Hii galaxies.

Box- and peanut-shaped bulges. I. Statistics
We present a classification for bulges of a complete sample of ~ 1350edge-on disk galaxies derived from the RC3 (Third Reference Catalogue ofBright Galaxies, de Vaucouleurs et al. \cite{rc3}). A visualclassification of the bulges using the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS) inthree types of b/p bulges or as an elliptical type is presented andsupported by CCD images. NIR observations reveal that dust extinctiondoes almost not influence the shape of bulges. There is no substantialdifference between the shape of bulges in the optical and in the NIR.Our analysis reveals that 45% of all bulges are box- and peanut-shaped(b/p). The frequency of b/p bulges for all morphological types from S0to Sd is > 40%. In particular, this is for the first time that such alarge frequency of b/p bulges is reported for galaxies as late as Sd.The fraction of the observed b/p bulges is large enough to explain theb/p bulges by bars. Colour distributions in E-S0 galaxies.. V. Colour data for strongly inclined lenticulars
Colours distributions have been studied in 12 S0 galaxies, most of thesenearly edge-on, from high resolution frames obtained at the CFHT and thePic du Midi 2 m telescope, supplemented for some purposes by lowresolution frames from the Observatoire de Haute Provence 120 cmtelescope. Great attention has been given to reduce the effects of``differential seeing", resulting from different PSF's in the two framesneeded for a colour measurement. Errors from various sources, and theireffect upon measured quantities, have been evaluated from the study ofpseudo-colours (obtained by applying our measuring techniques to pair offrames taken in the same passband), and from the comparison of coloursdata from our various series. Data are given about the following topics:- Radial isophotal colour profiles, leading to reference colours at r_eand gradients in 4 colour indices (except for missing data); - Referencecolours and gradients in possibly dustless regions of nearly pure bulgeor disk, allowing a comparison between the two components; - Dustpatterns, seen in 7 objects; - Systematic differences between major andminor axis colours upon isophotal contours (outside dust patterns). Botha redder or bluer major axis are encountered depending upon the object,or the central distance in a given object. The observations maysometimes be explained by local dust concentration in disks. In othercases population differences between spheroidal and disk componentsshould be invoked; - Asymmetries in light and colour distributions alongthe minor axis in 3 objects, due to dust concentrated in the disk; -Correlations between ring structure and major axis colour profiles.Based on observations collected at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope,the Observatoire du Pic du Midi and the Observatoire de Haute-Provence.

Box- and peanut-shaped bulges. II. NIR observations
We have observed 60 edge-on galaxies in the NIR in order to study thestellar distribution in galaxies with box/peanut-shaped bulges. The muchsmaller amount of dust extinction at these wavelengths allows us toidentify in almost all target galaxies with box/peanut-shaped bulges anadditional thin, central component in cuts parallel to the major axis.This structure can be identified with a bar. The length of thisstructure scaled by the length of the bulge correlates with themorphologically classified shape of the bulge. This newly establishedcorrelation is therefore mainly interpreted as the projection of the barat different aspect angles. Galaxies with peanut bulges have a bar seennearly edge-on and the ratio of bar length to thickness, 14 +/- 4, canbe directly measured for the first time. In addition, the correlation ofthe boxiness of bulges with the bar strength indicates that the barcharacteristic could partly explain differences in the bulge shape.Furthermore, a new size relation between the box/peanut structure andthe central bulge is found. Our observations are discussed in comparisonto a N-body simulation for barred galaxies (Pfenniger & Friedli\cite{pfe}). We conclude that the inner region of barred disk galaxiesare build up by three distinct components: the spheroidal bulge, a thinbar, and a b/p structure most likely representing the thick part of thebar. Arcsecond Positions of UGC Galaxies
We present accurate B1950 and J2000 positions for all confirmed galaxiesin the Uppsala General Catalog (UGC). The positions were measuredvisually from Digitized Sky Survey images with rms uncertaintiesσ<=[(1.2")2+(θ/100)2]1/2,where θ is the major-axis diameter. We compared each galaxymeasured with the original UGC description to ensure high reliability.The full position list is available in the electronic version only.

Infrared Observations of Galaxies in the Local Universe. I. The Survey and Some Representative Results
This paper introduces a continuing survey of galaxies in the localuniverse. Consistent deep images are being acquired for a representativesample of 321 galaxies in the Uppsala General Catalogue down to 21.7 magarcsec-2 at Ks (2.16 mu m) and 22.4 mag arcsec-2 at J (1.25 mu m) usinga NICMOS camera with a 3.'8 x 3.'8 field of view attached to the 61 inch(1.5 m) telescope on Mount Bigelow. We provide some examples of theresults being obtained by employing 64 deep images of a subset of 44galaxies. Bulge-to-disk ratios are tabulated for 30 galaxies. Thebrightness of the central region of 44 galaxies declines approximately 5mag from Hubble type S0 to Sm. An exponential vertical scale height atKs is found to be 500 pc for the disk of UGC 5173. Arm amplitudes offour nearly face-on spiral galaxies are found to range between 11% and88% compared to the interarm region. There is some evidence that the armamplitude is larger at Ks than it is at J. Color gradients are measuredfor 15 galaxies with only one showing a significant nonzero result. Ameasurement of galactic symmetry applied to 64 deep images reveals anaverage asymmetry of 7.6% ( sigma = 4.6%) for these galaxies.

A catalogue of Mg_2 indices of galaxies and globular clusters
We present a catalogue of published absorption-line Mg_2 indices ofgalaxies and globular clusters. The catalogue is maintained up-to-datein the HYPERCAT database. The measurements are listed together with thereferences to the articles where the data were published. A codeddescription of the observations is provided. The catalogue gathers 3541measurements for 1491 objects (galaxies or globular clusters) from 55datasets. Compiled raw data for 1060 galaxies are zero-point correctedand transformed to a homogeneous system. Tables 1, 3, and 4 areavailable in electronic form only at the CDS, Strasbourg, via anonymousftp Table 2 is available both in text and electronic form.

Total magnitude, radius, colour indices, colour gradients and photometric type of galaxies
We present a catalogue of aperture photometry of galaxies, in UBVRI,assembled from three different origins: (i) an update of the catalogueof Buta et al. (1995) (ii) published photometric profiles and (iii)aperture photometry performed on CCD images. We explored different setsof growth curves to fit these data: (i) The Sersic law, (ii) The net ofgrowth curves used for the preparation of the RC3 and (iii) A linearinterpolation between the de Vaucouleurs (r(1/4) ) and exponential laws.Finally we adopted the latter solution. Fitting these growth curves, wederive (1) the total magnitude, (2) the effective radius, (3) the colourindices and (4) gradients and (5) the photometric type of 5169 galaxies.The photometric type is defined to statistically match the revisedmorphologic type and parametrizes the shape of the growth curve. It iscoded from -9, for very concentrated galaxies, to +10, for diffusegalaxies. Based in part on observations collected at the Haute-ProvenceObservatory.

New techniques for deriving bulge and disk models of two-component galaxies
A new method is introduced to ``separate" the bulge and disk componentsof early-type galaxies, i.e. S0's and disky E's, viewed at suchinclinations that their isophotes depart significantly from ellipses. Inour approach, the two components are assumed to have concentric andcoaxial ellipitical isophotes of arbitrary surface brightness (SuBr) andellipticity profiles. These four functions are to be determined bycomparing calculated and easily measured quantities, i.e. the harmonicsof the SuBr along suitable reference ellipses. The principle of themethod is straightforward and its implementation very easy in favourablecases. There are difficulties however with truly edge-on galaxies, wherethe assumption of elliptical isophotes is perhaps no more valid for thedisk, and with objects of such inclinations that the geometricalsignature of the two-components structure tends to vanish. Ourtechniques have been tested with a number of calculated model objects,and with 9 real galaxies, observed at sub-arcsec resolution at the CFHTor at the Pic du Midi. The results are compared with those of otherauthors, sometimes involving more uncertain assumptions: the one ofnegligible disk contributions to the minor axis SuBr is unsatisfactoryfor S0 galaxies.

A catalogue of spatially resolved kinematics of galaxies: Bibliography
We present a catalogue of galaxies for which spatially resolved data ontheir internal kinematics have been published; there is no a priorirestriction regarding their morphological type. The catalogue lists thereferences to the articles where the data are published, as well as acoded description of these data: observed emission or absorption lines,velocity or velocity dispersion, radial profile or 2D field, positionangle. Disk structure and kinematics of S0 galaxies.
The photometric and kinematic structure of 15 nearly edge-on S0 galaxiesand one bulge dominated spiral galaxy has been investigated on the basisof a decomposition method applied to CCD data. The method consists inthe construction of a bulge model by masking the isophote regionaffected by the disk. The subtraction of this model yields the surfacebrightness distribution of the disk. It has been found that asignificant number of the objects possess two disks: the main, outerdisk having an inner cut-off and a steeper inner disk. The radial run ofthe a_4_/a parameter (which shows two or three maxima) supports thisfinding. Wiggles in the rotation curve of the galaxies are clearlyconnected to the observed two-disk structure. They are not caused byintrinsically peculiar kinematics of the objects, but simply by thesuperposition of the (hot) bulge component and the two (cold) diskcomponents. In several objects we find ring-like structures. These arelocated near the turnover radius of the rotation curve.

The fundamental plane of early-type galaxies: stellar populations and mass-to-light ratio.
We analyse the residuals to the fundamental plane (FP) of ellipticalgalaxies as a function of stellar-population indicators; these are basedon the line-strength parameter Mg_2_ and on UBVRI broad-band colors, andare partly derived from new observations. The effect of the stellarpopulations accounts for approximately half the observed variation ofthe mass-to-light ratio responsible for the FP tilt. The residual tiltcan be explained by the contribution of two additional effects: thedependence of the rotational support, and possibly that of the spatialstructure, on the luminosity. We conclude to a constancy of thedynamical-to-stellar mass ratio. This probably extends to globularclusters as well, but the dominant factor would be here the luminositydependence of the structure rather than that of the stellar population.This result also implies a constancy of the fraction of dark matter overall the scalelength covered by stellar systems. Our compilation ofinternal stellar kinematics of galaxies is appended.

A Catalog of Stellar Velocity Dispersions. II. 1994 Update
A catalog of central velocity dispersion measurements is presented,current through 1993 September. The catalog includes 2474 measurementsof 1563 galaxies. A standard set of 86 galaxies is defined, consistingof galaxies with at least three reliable, concordant measurements. It issuggested that future studies observe some of these standard galaxies sothat different studies can be normalized to a consistent system. Allmeasurements are reduced to a normalized system using these standards.

Quantitative morphology of E-S0 galaxies. III. Coded and parametric description of 108 galaxies in a complete sample
A survey has been performed of the morphological and photometricproperties of 108 E-S0 galaxies out of a complete sample of 112: thissample is built from the Revised Shapley-Ames Catalogue (RSA, Sandage& Tammann, 1981) keeping objects with δ>-10deg andV_0_<3000km/s, rejecting SB0's and Local Group dwarfs. The data weremainly derived from our CCD observations at Observatoire deHaute-Provence: the camera allowed fields of 4x7 arcmin (or 7x7 for thelast run), the seeing being generally in the 2-3 arcsec FWHM range. Themeasurements include the isophotal analysis according to Carter's(1978), principles,and the photometric profiles along the two main axis.Opposite semi-axis are measured separately to detect asymmetries.Partial results about strongly flattened galaxies were given anddiscussed in Paper I and II of this series (Michard & Marchal, 1993and 1994). The present paper gives in tabular form: - in Table 2a, 2bthe most useful morphological parameters and a coded description of the108 studied objects. This table includes a revised classificationaccording to Hubble types, this being completed by the subclassificationof ellipticals into "boxy", "disky" and "undeterminate". It alsoincludes the classifications of envelope geometry and disk extent, asintroduced in Paper I. - in Table 3a, b the usual photometric globalparameters, also converted to absolute units for future reference. Thetabular data is completed by individual notes for each galaxy, collectedin an Appendix. A discussion of the present data will be presented in aforthcoming Paper IV : it aims at checking the working hypothesis thatgalaxies of both E and S0 Hubble types belong, but for a small minority,to a common population of objects with similar structures.

Quantitative Morphology of E / s0 Galaxies - Part Two - Possible Environmental Effects on the Properties of Lenticular Galaxies
In Paper I of this series (Michard & Marchal 1993) "E-like S0s" weredefined as objects without ring nor lens, and with the disk fullyembedded in a spheroidal halo. It was tentatively suggested that suchobjects might be comparatively more frequent in the Virgo cluster thanin the general field, as is known to be the case for ellipticals. Thisquestion is reconsidered with an enlarged set of S0s (now nearlycomplete) and a much enlarged (and now complete) Virgo subset: theprevious suggestion is confirmed.

Dynamically hot galaxies. II - Global stellar populations
The global relationship between the stellar populations and thestructural properties of dynamically hot galaxies (DHGs) is investigatedusing the same sample as was analyzed by Bender et al. (1992), whichincludes giant ellipticals, low-luminosity ellipticals, compactellipticals, diffuse dwarf ellipticals, dwarf spheroidals, and bulges.It was found that all DHGs follow a single relationship between globalstellar population (represented by Mg2 index or B-V color) and centralvelocity dispersion sigma(0), and that the Mg2-sigma(0) relation issignificantly tighter than the relation between the Mg2 index andabsolute luminosity. The relation between central Mg2 index and bulk B-Vcolor was also found to be tight.

The dependence of the cool matter content on galaxy morphology in galaxies of types E/S0, S0, and SA
Using the material assembled in earlier papers, we examine the manner inwhich the interstellar matter content varies along the Hubble sequencefrom S0 galaxies to Sa galaxies selected from the RSA2 compilation. Forthis we make use of a new and more detailed classification which isdescribed here as applied to these early disk/spiral galaxies. Theprominence of the disk in S0's and the visibility of features (H IIregions) in the Sa's serve as the basis for the subtypes. Three S0categories: subtle, intermediate, and pronounced, and four Sadescriptors: very early, early, intermediate, and late are assigned tothe galaxies. It is found that the total amount of hydrogen (H I + H2)is a function of subtype, being low in the S0's and rising smoothly fromthe early Sa's to the later Sa's. The average surface density ofhydrogen exceeds 3 solar masses/pc-squared only in the latest subtypesof the Sa's. We conclude that the prominence of the disk of a galaxyclosely follows the amount of cool gas which the disk contains.

Velocity dispersions and metallicities of 18 S0/E galaxies - Synthetic Mg I triplet lines in old composite systems
Velocity dispersions and Mg2 indices were measured from CCD spectra of13 box-shaped galaxies and five ellipticals. Evidences for a differentrelation between velocity dispersion and metallicity, relative toellipticals, was found for our S0 sample; we attribute this differenceto the SO disk component, affecting both the mean velocity dispersionand mean metallicity. In a tentative to reproduce the integrated bulgespectra of our sample galaxies, we have built composite spectra using agrid of synthetic spectra, where the basic parameters were assumed to besimilar to those of galactic bulge globular clusters.

Quantitative morphology of E-S0 galaxies. I - Bulge, lens, disk, and envelope in edge-on systems
Surface photometry of 37 nearly edge-on, nonbarred E-S0 galaxies ispresented. Inner rings are found in more than half of the S0-classifiedobjects. An 'outer lens' may be seen in nine objects, seven showing bothouter lens and 'ring-lens'. Preliminary statistics are given on diskswhich are fully embedded in the envelope, mixed with it, or extendoutwards without a noticeable envelope. The E-classified galaxies in thesample show no ring, and all the disks are fully embedded except in onecase. The f4 asymmetry expressed by small trends in major axis positionangle and nonzero value of Carter's coefficient f4 of sin 4 omega isclearly shown by 10 objects in the sample.
